Oxidative and Storage Stability Studies of Biodiesel Using Commercially Available Antioxidants

چکیده
The word “antioxidant” has become increasingly popular in modern society as it gains publicity through mass media coverage of its health benefits. The dictionary definition of antioxidant is rather straightforward but a traditional annotation would define antioxidant as “a substance that opposes oxidation or inhibits reactions promoted by oxygen or peroxides, many of these substances (as the tocopherols) being used as preservatives in various products (as in fats, oils, food products, and soaps for retarding the development of rancidity, in gasoline and other petroleum products for retarding gum formation and other undesirable changes, and in rubber for retarding aging)”. A more biologically relevant definition of antioxidants is “synthetic or natural substances added to products to prevent or delay their deterioration by action of oxygen in air [1].

Stability of biodiesel, its improvement and the effect of antioxidant treated blends on engine performance and emission
Biodiesel consists of long chain fatty acid esters derived from vegetable oils, animal fats, and used oils. Biodiesel contains different types, amounts, and configurations of unsaturated fatty acids, which are prone to oxidation. Biodiesel stability is affected by its interaction with atmospheric oxygen, light and temperature, storage conditions, and factors causing sediment formation. It can b...
متن کاملThe Effect of Natural and Synthetic Antioxidants on the Oxidative Stability of Biodiesel
A significant problem associated with the commercial acceptance of biodiesel is poor oxidative stability. This study investigates the effectiveness of various natural and synthetic antioxidants [a-tocopherol (a-T), butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA), butyl-4-methylphenol (BHT), tert-butylhydroquinone (TBHQ), 2, 5-di-tert-butylhydroquinone (DTBHQ), ionol BF200 (IB), propylgallate (PG), and pyrogallo...
متن کاملEvaluation of the Antioxidant Potential of Fennel Seed Extract as Compared to the Synthetic Antioxidants in Margarine under Accelerated Storage Condition
The oxidative stability of margarine supplemented with different concentrations of fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) seed extract (FSE) was compared to the synthetic antioxidants; butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) at legal concentrations. The experiment was carried out under accelerated storage conditions for 4 weeks employing peroxide value (PV), p-anisidine value (AV...
متن کاملImprovement of the Oxidative Stability of Sesame Oil Using Spirulina as a Natural Antioxidant
Background: Nowadays, natural antioxidants are used to replace synthetic antioxidants for delaying or preventing the oxidation of edible oils. In this study, phenolic compounds and antioxidant properties of methanol extracts of Spirulina microalgae (Arthrospira platensis) were measured. Methods: Phenolic content was measured by Folin–Ciocalteau method and antioxidant activity was measured by th...
